On many insulated heat-shrink terminals, color is used as a quick visual guide to the conductor size the barrel is designed to accept. In the ALBO terminal range, the common mapping is red for 22–16 AWG, blue for 16–14 AWG, and yellow for 12–10 AWG.

Color is useful, but it should never replace the actual wire-range marking or product specification. Different manufacturers and specialty terminal systems can use different conventions.

The ranges overlap at some nominal AWG boundaries depending on the terminal system. Always use the specification supplied with the exact terminal rather than forcing a conductor into a barrel because the color appears familiar.

Color Does Not Tell You the Connector Function

The same color convention can appear across several terminal shapes:

  • Butt connectors join two wire ends in a permanent inline splice.
  • Ring terminals terminate a wire onto a stud or screw.
  • Fork terminals fit under compatible screw terminals and can be easier to remove without fully removing the screw.
  • Male/female spade connectors create a serviceable quick-disconnect connection.

A blue ring terminal and a blue butt connector can both be intended for the same conductor range while serving completely different mechanical functions.

How to Select the Correct Heat-Shrink Terminal

  1. Identify the conductor gauge. Do not estimate solely from outside insulation diameter.
  2. Choose the connector function. Decide whether the connection is a splice, ring, fork, or disconnect.
  3. Confirm the barrel range. Match the AWG range printed on the product or packaging.
  4. Check the second mechanical dimension. Ring and fork terminals also require the correct stud size; spade disconnects require the correct tab geometry.
  5. Verify the application rating. Voltage, current, temperature, environment, and equipment requirements still apply.

Crimp and Heat-Shrink Checks

A correctly sized terminal can still fail if it is installed incorrectly.

  • Strip only enough insulation for the conductor to seat fully in the metal barrel.
  • Use a crimp tool and die intended for insulated heat-shrink terminals and the selected wire range.
  • Position the crimp over the metal barrel, not only over the heat-shrink sleeve.
  • After crimping, perform a firm pull check before heating.
  • Apply controlled heat evenly around the sleeve until it conforms to the wire and terminal. Avoid direct flame.
  • Stop heating before scorching, bubbling, splitting, or deforming the sleeve.
