How to select the right spade connector
1. Match the conductor AWG
The stripped conductor needs to fit the crimp barrel specified by the terminal manufacturer. Do not force an oversized conductor into a small barrel or fold a small conductor to make it fill an oversized connector.
2. Match male and female geometry
The two halves must be designed to mate correctly. A loose connection can create intermittent electrical contact and heat.
3. Use the proper crimp tool
Use a crimper designed for insulated heat-shrink terminals. The goal is a controlled mechanical compression of the conductor without cutting the barrel or insulation.
4. Perform a pull test
After crimping, apply a firm manual pull appropriate for the wire size. The conductor should not slide out of the terminal.
5. Heat the insulation evenly
When using heat-shrink terminals, apply controlled heat around the sleeve until it conforms to the wire insulation. Avoid overheating or scorching the sleeve.
6. Support the harness
A terminal should not carry the mechanical weight of a loose harness. Provide appropriate strain relief and routing so vibration is not concentrated at the crimp.
