Plastic self-drilling anchors are practical for ordinary household mounting where the load is modest and the drywall is in good condition. Their threads cut into the gypsum while the body expands or grips as the screw is installed.

When zinc anchors are the better choice

Zinc-alloy anchors are more rigid and resist crushing during installation. They are often selected for heavier fixtures, thicker hardware brackets, or applications where the screw will experience repeated movement.

Greater material stiffness does not automatically guarantee a safe installation. The anchor still depends on sound drywall, correct screw engagement, adequate wall thickness, and a load within the complete system rating.

How wall condition changes the decision

Clean, undamaged drywall

Either anchor type may work when properly sized. Plastic is often sufficient for lighter projects, while zinc provides a more rigid installation.

Soft or previously damaged drywall

Neither self-drilling anchor should be forced into crushed gypsum. Move the hole, use a larger compatible system, or consider a toggle anchor that engages behind the wall.

Thin drywall or limited cavity depth

Check the anchor length before drilling. Plumbing, wiring, insulation, masonry, or another surface may sit close behind the panel.

Installation differences

  1. Mark the mounting point and confirm that no stud or utility conflicts with the position.
  2. Install the anchor perpendicular to the wall at low speed.
  3. Stop when the flange is flush; do not bury it below the paper face.
  4. Use the supplied or specified screw.
  5. Tighten until the fixture is secure without crushing the drywall.
  6. Test the fixture gently before applying the full load.
