Check Sharpening First

One side is sharper than the other

Hand filing can become asymmetric because most operators find one filing direction easier. Compare cutter condition on both sides and use consistent filing pressure, angle, and stroke count.

Depth gauges must be consistent too

Even with equal cutter lengths, inconsistent depth gauges can change how aggressively individual cutters bite. Service them using the chain manufacturer's specified gauge and procedure.

Inspect the Guide Bar

A correctly sharpened chain can still cut crooked if the bar no longer guides it squarely.

  • Look for burrs or mushrooming on the bar rails.
  • Compare rail wear on both sides.
  • Check the groove for excessive side clearance.
  • Inspect the bar nose and nose sprocket where applicable.
  • Keep the oil holes and groove clean.

If the bar manufacturer recommends periodic bar flipping for your model, doing so can help distribute normal rail wear. Follow the bar or saw manual rather than using a universal interval.

Verify Chain Fit, Tension, and Lubrication

A replacement chain must match the required pitch, gauge, and drive-link count. Gauge is especially relevant to tracking: a chain that is not correctly matched to the guide-bar groove cannot be expected to run accurately.

Set chain tension according to the saw manufacturer's procedure. A chain that is too loose can track poorly or derail; a chain that is too tight creates heat and accelerated wear.

Also confirm that bar-and-chain oil is reaching the chain. Poor lubrication can accelerate uneven rail, drive-link, and sprocket wear.

When to Sharpen and When to Replace

Sharpening can correct normal dullness and moderate cutter-length differences. Replacement is the better option when cutters are badly damaged, near their wear limits, rivets or drive links are damaged, or the chain still cannot track correctly after proper sharpening and inspection of the bar and sprocket.

Do not install a new chain on a severely worn bar or sprocket and expect the tracking problem to disappear. Treat the chain, guide bar, and drive sprocket as a system.
