Quick answer: which way should a chainsaw chain face?
On a standard chainsaw, the sharp leading edges of the cutters on the top of the guide bar should point forward, away from the powerhead and toward the bar nose. On the underside of the bar, those cutters travel back toward the saw.
If the cutters on top point toward the powerhead, the loop is installed backward. The saw may run and the chain may move, but it will not cut normally. Stop the saw, make it safe, and reverse the loop before using it.

- Bar nose: the chain wraps around the tip and changes direction.
- Bottom of the bar: cutter points face back toward the powerhead.
Check more than one cutter. Left-hand and right-hand cutters alternate, so their side angles differ, but both must face in the chain's direction of travel. Viewing several links also helps you avoid mistaking a depth gauge or tie strap for the cutting edge.
Why a backward chain moves but does not cut
The drive sprocket can pull the loop around the bar even when the cutters face backward. However, the sharpened working corners then trail behind instead of entering the wood first. The result is usually little or no cutting, extra rubbing, and heat at the bar and chain.
Do not compensate by pressing harder. Excess pressure does not correct the cutter orientation and can reduce control. If a recently installed chain spins but only polishes the wood or produces fine dust without feeding normally, shut the saw down and check direction before investigating sharpening, tension, lubrication, or saw power.
How to reverse a chain installed backward
- Disable the saw so it cannot start.
- Release chain tension according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Remove the clutch or sprocket cover if the saw design requires it.
- Lift the chain from the bar and drive sprocket.
- Turn the complete loop over so the cutters on top point toward the bar nose.
- Seat every drive link fully in the bar groove and around the sprocket.
